A Kyrgyz Military Court is to consider the case of the severed ear and finger sent on August 17, 2007, to Medet Sadyrkulov, former Chief of Staff under President Bakiev. Sadyrkulov died a year after the incident under suspicious circumstances.

The main suspect in the case of sending the cut off body parts to the ex-Chief of Staff is Tynychbek Mamatov, who worked in December 2007 as an operative in the Sverdlovsk District Department of Internal Affairs in Bishkek.

The lawyer representing Mamatov asked the court to close the case against his client because of the “statute of limitations.”

A representative Sadyrkulov’s family, Leonid Luzhanska, said that he and the prosecution were firmly opposed to any acquittal of Mamatov.

Judge Marlin Tentimishev’s military court will announce a decision on Mamatov’s fate on August 17.

Earlier on April 5, Mamatov’s lawyer argued for the release of his client, based on the argument that his client’s actions “did not constitute an offense.”

Mamatov has already been punished for “abuse of power.” He was also charged with abusing the corpse of a homeless person, to whom the ear and nose belonged. Mamatov does not recognize his guilt.

Sadyrkulov’s case

A parallel case determining the cause of Sadyrkulov’s death cause of the death was considered on August 16 behind closed doors due to the fact that “secret” information was considered.

Kloop.kg was unable to determine what information was discussed at the meeting since journalists were not allowed into the hall.

The person thought responsible for giving the order to send the ear and nose to Sadyrkulov is the ex-president’s brother, Janysh Bakiyev, who headed the State Security Service at the time.

According to state investigators, the ex-president’s brother is also the main suspect in the organization of Sadyrkulov’s alleged assasination in March 2009.

Two months before his death, Sadyrkulov resigned as President Bakiev’s Chief of Staff and according to his friends and leaked diplomatic cables attributed to the U.S. Embassy in Bishkek on WikiLeaks, was actively planning a coup.

Initially, the cause of Sadyrkulov’s death was declared as a car accident. But after the overthrow of the Bakiev family in April 2010, the Kyrgyz authorities launched an investigation into his death as a possible murder ordered by Zhanysh Bakiev.
